Courtney B. Shires, MD, graduated from Mississippi College with magnum cum laude in Biology and Chemistry. She graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2006, and completed a residency in Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Tennessee in 2011. She then completed a prestigious one year fellowship in head and neck oncology, skull base, and microvascular reconstruction at the University of Pennsylvania.
She has been a faculty member in the University of Tennessee Department of Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery since 2012. She became an integral part of the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Team at the University of Tennessee in partnership with Methodist Hospital and West Cancer Center, which is the only clinic of this type in the region. During her professional career, Dr. Shires has focused on the care of patients with head and neck cancer, thyroid tumors, skull base tumors, and salivary tumors. She is well published in diseases of the head and neck, and has given dozens of presentations at local, regional, and national conferences. She has served on the Surgery and Anesthesia Committee at Methodist University Hospital. She has gained intramural grants and industry funding for multiple projects while at the University of Tennessee for cadaveric, rodent, and clinical projects.
